Make a repeating pattern

Paint one tile, then repeat it across the canvas.

Paint a single motif and let Magerie repeat it into a pattern. Change the motif and the whole pattern updates live.

1. Paint one tile#

Add an Image node (a square canvas works well). Paint a simple motif: a leaf, a dot, a squiggle. Paint it big: Tile keeps your canvas size and shrinks every copy to fit. Keep it clear of the edges so the repeat lines up cleanly.

2. Repeat it#

Add a Tile node and wire your canvas into it. Set Repeat X and Repeat Y for the grid size, and turn on Mirror to flip alternating cells, which helps hide the seams.

Now go back and paint on the original canvas. Every tile updates at once.

3. Export#

Wire the Tile node into an Image Exporter node and save. It comes out at your canvas size. For a bigger file, start from a bigger canvas.

Take it further#

  • Go geometric: skip the painting and add a Pattern node for checkerboard, stripes, dots, or grid. Set its two colors right on the node.
  • Try new palettes: add a Gradient Map after Tile to recolor the whole pattern without repainting.
